Comforted by the fact that Léa has returned, Chéri runs home to Edmée where he makes love to her properly and kindly, thinking that he can now live in peace with Edmée, juggling both women. Former competitors, they still can't help sniping at one another.
Closely based on Colette's novel, "Cheri", this is a beautiful production starring Michelle Pfeiffer as Lea de Lonval, an aging courtesan who unexpectedly falls in love with the handsome but scapegrace son (Rupert Friend) of her long time associate, Mme. Colette would have approved.

We are indebted to Collette and Stephen Frears for showing us the loveliness, and even the artful decadence, of that time, and we are indebted to the talented cast for giving life to the "demi-monde" ("half-world") of that era. Michelle Pfeiffer is sensual and beautiful as the aging courtesan Lea—a woman approaching a "certain age," as the narrator (Stephen Frears) informs us. They become lovers and, to their surprise, the relationship lasts six years. Chéri was selected for the Berlin Film Festival official competition. During France's belle époque before World War I, elegant cars, mansions, and servants defined the lives of les grandes horizontals, the courtesans of kings and millionaires. Peloux, wonderfully played by Kathy Bates. While out on the town with a friend, Chéri tries opium and cocaine, and on his way back he notices that Léa's apartment is no longer empty and she has returned home. My Dearest Stacey, Here as promised is Chéri. He is also ridiculously beautiful so it's believable that Michelle's character would fall in love with him. Although Léa only plans on keeping Chéri around for a short while, their affair turns into a six-year relationship, in which Léa pays for Chéri's expenses, (although he has access to considerable wealth from his mother) and Chéri wears Léa's silk pajamas and pearls. Title: Bates carries this quick switch act off several times in the movie, and it's a pleasure to watch her skill at these rapid changes. The two begin a lengthy relationship that ends only when it is decided that Cheri must settle down, manage his fortune and get married. Kathy Bates is terribly miscast and misdirected. As she overwhelms the rather weedy young man with her caresses, the viewer can see Lea's discomfort—seeing the loud red-head and her boy lover seems like seeing a grotesque mockery of herself and Cheri.Cheri, the title character, is played by Rupert Friend (Prince Albert in "The Young Victoria," and Mr. Wickham in the 2005 version of "Pride and Prejudice"). Peloux, heavy 2nd Empire furnishings, stiff wired dressed with bustles, are beautifully contrasted with Lea's lighter look—slender, graceful, light. It is Cheri who keeps us guessing as to what is going to happen. In Brooklyn, New York, Kyra (Michelle Pfeiffer) loses her job and struggles to survive on her ailing mother's income. He sends Charlotte the next day to investigate Léa's homelife, whereupon Léa claims she is madly in love with her new "suitor", and Charlotte tells her that Chéri and Edmée are likewise madly in love and happier than ever. At first Léa takes Chéri off her "friend" (and former rival) Charlotte's hands as a favor, as his dissipated lifestyle is irritating to Charlotte and unhealthy for Chéri.
