I bought the cheek blocks for this project from Nautos USA. The Harken illustration of this setup shows it on the mast, to pull the sail down and forward. Uncleat both the main halyard and the reefing line and then ease out the reefing line while you hoist the head of the mainsail back to full height. Using the Rhodes 19 hull, he modified the cockpit, added a good-sized cuddy cabin with a V-berth, redesigned the deck, simplified the standing rigging and named it the “O’Day Mariner.” Hull number one rolled out of the Fall River, MA factory in 1963 and was O’Day’s first venture into the cruising market. The main difference is that this system doesn’t use a hook in the luff cringle (grommet). Two boats come to my mind: Is there any advantage of the 130? Thank you. It also makes the boom height less of a factor since it doesn’t need to align with the block. When it comes time to release (shake out) the reef, point back into the wind and reverse the process. Probably worse because the springs and autumns are much warmer than in the past and the summer nights don't cool down like they did in years past. If you do this with the boom and mainsail removed from the sailboat, keep the mainsail luff aligned with the boom gooseneck at all times just as it would be when mounted to the mast. Align the block parallel to the boom and point it forward like in the picture below. Also, the luff needs adjusting..... otherwise you can easily become overpowered. Reeve the reefing line through the aft cringle in the mainsail, then through this cheek block and forward along the side of the boom like in the picture below. Can you send me a list of suppliers? Pull the line toward the mast with one hand while you simultaneously pull the standing end of the reefing line with your other hand. I like what you did. When I bought it , it did not have a regular jib but only a 130 % . Any reason you place the cheek block near the mast on the boom? The good news is that the channels where the rivers once flowed (Tennessee and lower Browns Creek) are too deep for weeds. I recommend that you purchase a new, Mariner standard-size jib. You can shake the reef out later if it turns out that you don’t need it. Your ability to reef your mainsail is one of the most important sailing skills that you can learn. Below the fairlead, you can tie the line to a jam cleat on the mast. Reefing systems for trailerable sailboats typically come in two types: single-line and double-line. Improve your sailboat's performance, safety, comfort, and appearance!

The Mariner sails better if the skipper and crew are sitting athwart or forward of the mainsheet block, so it does make sense to bring the genoa sheets forward from the lead car rather than aftward. You could use that sail in light airs but would suggest a smaller jib until you add additional gear aft of the genoa tracks and add a small fuler to the 130. Maybe on smaller trailer sailors, two reef points are not needed? (O'Day took over Marscot in 1958 to build the RHODES 19.) I describe them and my other favorite suppliers in The 6 Best Sources for Sailboat Parts and Supplies. Ive got winches , but they seem out of place. Thanks. Mount the remaining three regular eye straps evenly spaced between the two cheek blocks. I realize its not as safe (maybe we can find a way to move our halyard and topping lift to the cockpit), but am not sure from your description whether it is possible.
If you’re already in heavy weather, the sails will be flogging violently, which is another reason to do this at the dock during calmer weather. Can the single line reefing system still work with the standing end of the reefing line ending at the mast? The owner will not be liable for any losses, injuries, or damages from the display or use of this information. Is it faster , more power, if not why did the previous owner even bother with it? Hoist the sail on a windless day at the dock. .. Maybe you could devise a ready-reference listing on a page for the terms (or link to another site with that info)? First, untie the bunt lines. (The mainsheet block is typically a bit forward of the center of the cockpit. In the picture, there appears to be a horn or jam cleat forward of the unused winch. Either location will work but I prefer the block on the boom to keep the lead down the boom straight.

DIY trailerable sailboat restoration and improvement without throwing your budget overboard. A single-line system has fewer lines to attend to, which can make it faster to use but it’s a little more complicated than a double-line system.
Yes, weeds definitely reduce the sailing area in the summer and on into the fall. Installation instructions. Sorry iPhone/iPad users, we are still waiting on Apple.
