It was about 25 staves per chair. At some point even the best cared after barrel will become a 'garden barrel.'. You may need to sand the inside more aggressively. That is too simple, it sounds the way I design and build projects as I go. sweet build to be sure, makes me wish I had skills, perchance one day! All edges are rounded smooth for a perfectly comfortable reclaimed lounge chair. I used Minwax Red Oak 215 for staining the bare wood. They are shockingly comfortable and sturdy too. The oak is about 25 mm (1") think and I don't think would take a bend.One of my biggest issues with using the staves is that there isn't a straight edge anywhere, the inside is one radius, the outside another, the top and bottom taper out to the fat middle and the edges are angled too. On several very bad staved I used the wood eraser (Angle Grinder with 24grit sanding pad). Electrification & Restoration of a 1970's Raleigh Shopper, One wine barrel - both of my chairs used 25 staves - the hoops and heads were not used, .5 lb Stainless Steel Finish Head Deck Screws, Pliers - End cutting pliers/nippers work well, Chisel or screwdriver - for removing hoops, Saw - I used a band saw and chop saw but a hand saw would work just as well though it may take longer. As such I removed all the loose burning and the majority of the rust from the outside face. The face stave with the bung hole can easily be screwed into place from behind. Wine barrels would acutally be a little easier as they aren't burnt before use. Question 3. As an amateur woodworker I feel like it is a project that all makers must take on at some point. I like the design and it looks comfortable to! Up to this point every time you touched or sat in the seat you were covered in the black dust from the burnt wood. I have not done an instructable but maybe I should think about it. These barrels have quite the story, they are originally made and used in the southern US for storing and ageing bourbon, after a year they are sent to Scotland where they are then used to age whisky for a further three years. Screw the staves together. on Step 10. Hold the leg braces in place and scribe the angles in the wood. This is a great design plan and I have a couple of modifications for those reading if desired:1. on Step 9. Did you use 1 5/8" screws or 1 box of 5/8" screws? I believe they were 1.625" screws.

If this is the case, hit the edges with your sander to round them over a bit. If your choice of beverage is Wine over Bourbon, we have most designs available from Wine barrel wood too. The place near me that sells them are £45 (US$ 56) but I have seen them online for £100+ (US$ 124). About: Gadget fan, woodworker, photographer, husband, cyclist, kayaking SUP riding real ale drinker who does a bit of bouldering. Make sure to use at least two screws in each side to keep the chair from twisting. Next time I will use 1 1/4".
The two backrest styles we offer are what I call Open Top or Closed Top.
Buffalo Trace, Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Woodford Reserve just to name a few. They will not lay flat like normal dimensional lumber and can be difficult to support. I got them from a construction site for free. Around the top and bottom there were grooves called a croze, this had some paint and sealant in, I also cleaned most of this out with the sanding disk.All this sanding makes a huge amount of dust, WEAR A MASK ! I am not sure I can find used barrels where I am even though we have a few wineries, so, making the chair may not happen. I love the way red wine barrels look. Since the middle stave is a wide bung hole one, the over all feel is very much the same. The arm rests themselves add a great deal of strength to the chair and also hold the back in place. How old is your Bonsai, Good job on that too. I think you could get an end table out of the remnants but I haven’t done it yet. There are also some online resellers but I would use them as a last resort. The excess was cut off with a Japanese pull saw. To make sure the chair had enough strength I picked four of the wider staves, these were to be parts shown in red and blue on the image, ignore the green parts as these are just to support the arms for layout purposes.I wanted to make sure the seat was wide enough to be comfortable, so I sat and measured under my legs, this measured 450 mm, I added a bit and got 560 mm for the distance between the front legs.The stave at the very front of the chair was screwed to the front upright legs with the Phillips screws.
Thinking that making new rockers with oak plywood might be better and to notch the legs to fit in the rockers. How many staves in a barrel? The screws work fine. I wish I could claim it was an original idea but I've seen them a couple times before. A high buildup finish - like spar varnish - can be used to seal the char so you don't turn black when you sit in your adirondack.
Never stop creating. Drill through the face of the front leg into the end of the rear leg. The next step was to decide on the layout for the back and seat.This bit was tricky as I only had a couple of images to go off, none with measurements.I wanted to make sure the seat fitted me (this was going to be my chair) so I sat on another chair with my feet flat on the ground and measured to the inside of my knee. We have a wide variety of chairs, pub stools, end tables and ottoman. All whiskey barrel staves are cleaned and sanded then finished with Brazilian Rosewood Oil. I have been handcrafting these barrel chairs and other barrel furniture since 2012. Start at the front edge of the chair and work your way back to where the seat intersects the back. One more thing as well...at the end you said you will next make your "wives" chair. This gave a measurement of 455 mm (1' 5⅞"), my seat height. This inspired me to get off the sofa, next thing I needed to do was find a barrel, this was done from the sofa I found a company that sells used whisky barrels, amazingly they were only 20 km (12.5 miles) up the road from home. When the last hoop comes free the barrel will collapse into a heap. This is perhaps the most difficult step. My wife's chair is nearly done now too, just the varnishing to do and it will be ready for bottoms.I made a few design changes to this one that I think makes it work a little better.This one has stainless steel bracketry, a fan rather than the straight back and one special tweak to suit my wife, it has a wine glass holder cut into the arm. The oak is hard and you may find that the corners are too sharp. It’s more of a cosmetic preference for the customers. Yes I drilled pilot holes. Remember - you don't need anything that will hold liquid so it can be super gross and old. By using barrel staves you can build a unique adirondack at an affordable price. I had originally used a single bracket on one side of the cross member, I later added a second bracket on the other side.My aim was to maintain a 90º angle between the seat and back. One question please, Do you think you could make a rocker with the staves or is the oak too hard to re-bend for a better curve. If you are still concerned, consider dipping the tips in wood glue for additional strength. I think you forgot the ' to show possession and then you might want to change the v to an f, unless you have more than one wife. :) Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing! Looks great. Be careful not to split the wood. This was a fun bit of the project, I started by trying to knock the bands off the barrel but this was going nowhere fast.As I wasn't planning on reusing the bands I decided to cut the bands off. Did you make this project? This species of hardwood is very durable and highly rot resistant. Lightly sand the outside of the staves to clean up the exterior. Share it with us! I didn't want to remove too much of the staining from the hoops.
Thank you for the info Steven, Maybe I can find barrels that are inexpensive. Also, the seat was due to be spending its life outdoors to I applied the outdoor varnish.The legs and arms got three coats of varnish, the seat and back got four coats.I picked the specific varnish I used because it had a drying time allowing only 4 hours between coats. I am working on a concept to add joints tgat will allow me to adjust the angle of the back. Measurements... You credit me with too much I just laid the cardboard up against the wood and marked it with a pencil.
It was, however, a little big for shorter people.
