“When Your Small Form Tumbled into Me,” from Life on Mars. Tells jokes. I lay sprawled like a big-game rug across the bed:Belly down, legs wishbone-wide. Your father swung his feet to the floor.The kids upstairs dragged something back and forthOn shrieking wheels. He was born in 1935 and died in 2008. Throughout his poem he focuses on the importance of the blessing, because of the reason that a blessing is more valued when it is received after great longing and prayers. The final poem of this section, “They May Love All That He Has Chosen and Hate All That He Has Rejected,” is a six part poem that centers on the root causes and impacts of hatred, first meditating on the emotion itself and later bringing to light and memorializing the stories of black victims of hate crimes. Smith’s poems trouble our concept of space and time; they ask us to reconsider the kinds of language and stories we tell ourselves and each other. The poem was first published in 2011, but six years later it has obtained a stunning new relevance.
